The Religion of the Golden Rule

[It’s Palm Sunday, so this post is on the religious side.]  The song below is both nostalgic and meaningful to me. The fact that I stumbled on it this Palm Sunday weekend is profound. Hearing it, I am immediately reminded of being a little girl, singing this song, while marching on Palm Sunday (with palms in hand) throughout downtown Newport News. When I was younger, my family attended First Presbyterian Church, which I don’t believe is still in existence. Although the building, which was built in 1880 (I just looked it up on my nostalgic rabbit hole) may still be there.  So many memories. Hearing this song brings it all back.

This song has always been one of my favorite hymns. Like To Kill a Mockingbird, which had an impact on my life, so did this song. Its message is one that I try to live by. (“Try” being the key word.)

You see, I consider myself a religious mutt—with many years attending all types of churches: Presbyterian, Pentecostal, Catholic, Episcopalian, Lutheran, etc. What I learned is that almost all religions share a common belief in the Golden Rule: Treat others as you would like to be treated. (For me, it’s the question: what would Jesus do?) Right now, there are many claiming to be Christian and using that name as a badge of credibility while their actions contradict the very meaning of what I consider Christian.

As St. Francis of Assisi said: “Preach the gospel as often as possible. IF necessary, use words.”  So, how will they know we are Christians?

By our actions, our words, how we treat others, and . . . by our love.  Anyway, I will get off my pulpit (am I being a hypocrite by this very post?) and will share this song that I love. Since it’s Palm Sunday, I went with this version, even though I really wish I could fix the typos in this video.
