Getting Back to Creative, My Blog, The Diary of a Writer

Getting Back to Fiction

April 19, 2017

I have learned from first-hand experience that writing is indeed a muscle. The more you do it, the easier it becomes. Alternatively, when you get away from writing — well — it (like exercise) becomes quite difficult to pick back up.

I wrote my first book, Marianna Mestre: Nothing’s As It Seems (Volume 1), and published it exactly one year ago. That April 2016 release date marked a culmination of four years of writing and editing (of which I did diligently and daily). I can’t say that I knew what I was doing; there was a lot of stumbling and experimenting. What I can say is that WANTING TO QUIT and QUESTIONING MYSELF were chronic emotions that I had to push myself past.  They often partnered the voices that said: Why bother? What makes you think you can do this?  [Attention writers: If you are feeling this way or hear these voices, you are not alone? This is often a part of the process.]

I allowed myself to step away from my fiction writing for a bit. I needed time to focus on other priorities such as setting up this blog and getting it underway.  This blog will remain a priority (I do have a master plan for it), but so will be finishing up the sequel to my book.  I am happy to report that I am BACK AT IT! I dove back into Marianna Mestre last weekend.

And you know what?

I love it!  I didn’t realize until I heard my characters speak again (yes, I can actually hear them talking when I write), just how much I missed them and writing fiction. Fiction writing allows me to GET LOST in thought (not even my thought, but someone else’s). And so it begins. Again.  The writing of Marianna Mestre and she has some good stuff to share with you!

The Diary of a Writer will be a devoted section of my blog that will chronicle my sequel writing.  The rest of BrightLightLiving.com will chronicle my journey of taking charge of all aspects of my life (healthy, family, home, etc.). The site is a way of holding myself accountable and staying focused. The hope is that it also helps YOU stay focused on your goals.  Again, this is the year for all of us to ROCK IT!
